HotSpots Plugin for FCPX from Tangent FX

$

Dazzling original light flare footage meets the speed and control of FCPX. We started with original light flares captured at 1920×1080 on a Canon 5D, and added a plethora of control: color, color intensity, brightness, mirroring, and axis flipping.

This isn’t just a standard footage collection of light flares for FCPX. You can make each of the 34 generators or transitions infinitely unique with the available parameters. Change the colors, the brightness, add a mirror image, brighten it up. With the wide variety of footage in the collection, Tangent FX Hot Spots can add a subtle touch of light to your videos, or you can add some dramatic kick to your shots.

FOR FINAL CUT PRO X

Designed in Motion 5 for the Final Cut Pro X platform, Tangent FX Hot Spots is 34 HD elements that you can drag and drop onto your timeline, as a transition or looping generator clip. Like all of the FCPX transitions that Tangent FX designs, we put the priority in the design, aesthetic and usefulness. If you are looking for light flares for FCPX, you cannot find a better value than Hot Spots.

FCPXLAND’S REVIEW

The good: HotSpots offers 34 soft and organic HD light flare composites that have been made into FCPX generators and transitions for quick and easy use inside Final Cut Pro X.

The bad: Every plugin company has there version of a light leak plugin. Tangent FX is a little late to the party, but theirs is just as good as any.

Overall: If you are in need some soft, glowing lens flare composites and transitions, HotSpots is definitely worth a look at $34.

Text and Titles in Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5

$

First impressions can be make or break in so many real life situations. The same can be said for title sequences in films. With the advancement of motion graphics in the last 20 years, title sequences have gone from bland text over a black background to full on productions that are often outsourced to specialized visual effects companies.

As seen in Conan O’brien’s staff review of Final Cut Pro X, FCPX and its text features did not make a great first impression on its users:

However, with the help of some title movement tutorials and third party plugins, Final Cut Pro X’s text features can make some solid title sequences without having to learn more software.

TEXT IN FINAL CUT PRO X

Final Cut Pro X comes with some built in text graphics that can help add a little animation and flavor to your titles and text sequences. It also has dedicated templates for addressing speakers, and creating credit rolls

Here is an extremely thorough walkthrough on the features of the titles in the effects browser and inspector windows in Final Cut Pro X from Mahalodotcom.

Want to your text to move? Here is a great tutorial from GeniusDV that teaches you how to use basic texts in FCPX and open them in Motion 5 to make animated text:

TEXT IN MOTION 5

Motion 5 is a great application for making more advanced text animations because it comes fully loaded with text behaviors that can move each individual letter in your sequence for you, and when you are done you can easily save your project and open it in Final Cut Pro X.

Here is a tutorial from the good guys over at MacBreak Studio, Mark and Steve, on how to make slightly more advanced text animations in Motion 5:

THIRD PARTY PLUGINS

Motion graphics can be a time consuming and difficult task even for the most advanced editors. Many third party plugin companies have taken the time to make fully customizable, prefabbed title effects to help speed up the process of title sequence making. Here are some of the more popular text plugins that we have come across:

PRO3DT from Pixel Film Studios allows users to create 3D rotating text and logos without having to learn 3D animation or using another software.

MoType from Yanobox offers a large collection of fun and professional-looking title animations that can make your text fly, scan and swipe into the scene.

Text masking has become an extremely popular title effect in the last few years. With PROTMK from Pixel Film Studios you can create the text masks from Jay-Z and Kanye’s Paris video or the titles from the Hangover 3 trailers.

With over 30 presets to choose from, PROFRAG™ from Pixel Film Studios™ can help you make endless cool shatter effects in your next FCPX project. Simply insert a clip into one the PROFRAG™ drop zones and use the controls to shatter it appart!

SHATTER YOUR FOOTAGE

Smash and shatter your footage into smithereens and watch as 3D fragments and shards made out of your footage fly by the camera. You can even control the speed at which your image shatters, so you can slow it down as it flies by to see the remains of your clip.

30 SHATTER EFFECTS FOR FCPX

With over 30 unique camera movements and shatter patterns presets to choose from you can create numerous epic looks directly inside Final Cut Pro X. Simply choose one of the presets in the FCPX generators browser and calibrate the movement settings to your liking, and set keyframe in and out points.

ZOOM AROUND YOUR SHATTER

Use the 3D camera movement controls in FCPX Inspector to view your footage as it explodes and shatters. You also have control over the depth of field to create unique filmic looks as shards of footage fly by the camera.

DESIGNED FOR FINAL CUT PRO X

PROFRAG™ was designed by the team at Pixel Film Studios to work perfectly inside Final Cut Pro X. With easy-to-use drop zones, sliders and menus in the FCPX Inspector you can quickly and effortlessly change the Camera Movement, Shatter Amount, and Depth of Field.

FCPXLAND’S REVIEW

The good: ProFrag is a great plugin for creating 3D shatter effects in Final Cut Pro X. The depth and rotation of the fragments and shards give ProFrag a 3D element that other shatter effects on the market are lacking.

The bad: ProFrag is a FCPX generator that gives you a lot of control through keyframeable sliders. It would have been nice if there were a few presets that were pre-keyframed and ready to go out of the box.

Overall: ProFrag’s 3D shatter projection paths, rotation, extrude, and 3D camera controls give it a cool and unique look on an effect that could have been corny if not done right.

Generators in Final Cut Pro X

$
0
0

Whether creating a lower third, background, or or motion graphics template, a generator can become a handy tool for creating and rendering original footage in Final Cut Pro X. A generator template is similar to a standard Motion project. However, when saved, it is exported to the Generators Browser in Final Cut Pro.

Like any content added to a Final Cut Pro project, a generator template can be composited over a clip in the Final Cut Pro Timeline, or added to the main Timeline. The duration of the generator in Final Cut Pro is determined by its duration when created and saved in Motion.

Here are some awesome tips and tutorials to check out on how to maximize the potential of your generators:

WHAT ARE GENERATORS?

Unlike a FCPX effect that needs to placed on a clip or image, the generator template has no placeholder layer. In fact, the generator is nearly identical to any other Motion template: add image layers and effects to create a composition just as you would in a standard Motion project. When you save the template in Motion, the generator effect is automatically exported to the Final Cut Pro Generators Browser, where it can be dragged into your timeline to act as an independent layer.

Here is a 3 minute video displaying all the generators that come with Final Cut Pro X, courtesy of Yordi Capo:

HOW TO CREATE A GENERATOR

When you open Motion 5, a pop-up menu allows you to choose what kind of project you are making. Use the Final Cut Generator template to create a custom generator for use in Final Cut Pro X. In this template, you can add text, shapes, filters and generators like any other Motion project.

Keep in mind, like any clip or image added to a Final Cut Pro project, a generator template can be composited over another clip in the Final Cut Pro Timeline, or added to the main Timeline, so even though there is no placeholder layer in Motion, anything sitting below the generator in FCPX can been seen in through the transparent areas.

The duration of the generator in Final Cut Pro is determined by its duration when created and saved in Motion. If you adjust the length of a generator in FCPX, it will stretch out the keyframes and timing of the template. However, if you compound the generator in the timeline and then adjust the length of the compound clip, you can change the duration without having the clip speed up. Here is a tutorial from MacBreak Studio on how to retime a generator:

THIRD PARTY PLUGIN GENERATORS

For those of you that don’t have Motion 5 and are looking to add a motion graphics sequence or stylized theme to your project, you are in luck. Many third party plugin developers have begun publishing their Motion Templates as generators for Final Cut Pro X.

However, an important thing to note, the more advanced generators do import into FCPX as an unrendered visual effect that can take awhile to export from Final Cut, so we would suggest that you start and dedicate a project to the generator template, export the template from this project and then bring the export into your larger project.

Here is an example of a Motion Template that was made available in FCPX as a generator, PROWALL from Pixel Film Studios:

As always, if you have any tips or tricks for using generators in Final Cut Pro X, share it with your fellow readers in the comment section below.

Using Behaviors in Motion 5

$
0
0

Whether you are creating a text animation or 3D camera movement inside of Motion 5, using basic behaviors on your shapes, groups, filters, and generators can save you a lot of time and the headache of placing hundreds of keyframes. Anything that has a keyframeable parameter can have a behavior applied to it.

Motion behaviors can be used to animate specific parameters of an object to which they are applied. Some affect position, while others affect scale, rotation, or opacity. Motion 5 comes a pretty awesome stock library of behaviors to choose from. Some dedicated to text animations, while others can only be applied to a camera. If you can’t find the one you need in the library, you can create a custom behavior and save it to be used later.

Here is a quick tutorial from the good guys at MacBreak Studio about the differences between keyframing and applying behaviors:

BASIC BEHAVIORS

Basic motion behaviors can applied to parameters to oscillate, randomize or sequence certain values such as position or scale. This can be great for making text fly across the screen or shapes bounce in place.

This tutorial from Lynda can show you how to make a basic shape animation using behaviors in Motion 5:

Here is a slightly more advanced use of Motion behaviors that David Allen used to move his Commander Zed along a designated path:

ADVANCED MOTION BEHAVIORS

Using some of the more advanced behaviors and a little creativity, can help you create some extremely intricate effects rather quickly. These behaviors can be used to make a 3D camera glide around an object or even trace on a signature.

In this tutorial Mark and Steve use some replicators and more advanced behaviors like sequence paint to create an animated growing vine effect.

CREATING CUSTOM BEHAVIORS

Need to create a movement or effect that is not available in the stock behavior library? You can save any object in Motion to the Library, including cameras, lights, customized filters and behaviors, groups, and layers. So you can animate an object with behaviors and keyframes and then save those set of keyframes to the behaviors Library and retain their animation when applied to another project.

Your customized behaviors can be saved in an existing folder in the Library, or you can create a your own folder (such as “Jim’s Behavior Library). After you save it to the Library, the behavior can be added to a project like any other object in the Library. When you scroll through all the behaviors in the Library, you will know which ones you made because they will appear with a custom icon.

As always, if you have any other tips for your fellow readers, please do share.

Film in RAW with the Canon 5D Mark III and Magic Lantern

$

In the last couple years, there have two features that we have heard about all cameras moving towards – 4K footage and the ability to shoot in RAW.  As we saw at NAB, 4K cameras are starting to move into the prosumer price point and will soon be widely used by videographers, and now with firmware updates to cameras such as the Canon Mark III, we will all soon be able to edit with RAW footage as well.

When you film with your normal camera settings, the white balance and ISO are burned into the footage, and thus cannot be greatly altered or improved in post-production. RAW footage, on the other hand, is like undeveloped film ready to be processed however you want it to be. Imagine shooting in every ISO and white balance all at the same time.

THE CANON 5D MARK III

Now one of the most popular cameras in the world for videographers just got even better thanks to the work of Magic Lantern! With the new firmware add-on, the Canon 5D Mark III (and Mark II) can now shoot 24fps in RAW. With this add-on, the 5D becomes a more affordable option to recording in RAW than the Black Magic Cinema camera which put the industry on call by offering 2.5K and RAW for $3000.

Shooting in RAW gives you more control over the exposure and white balance of your shot in post-production while also improving the dynamic range and resolution. This firmware update isn’t available yet but there are several examples of the 5D RAW footage on the internet.

The New Mac Pro for Final Cut Pro X

$

Yesterday Apple showed us a sneak peek into the future of the pro desktop with a first look at the next generation Mac Pro.

Donning a new sleek black cylinder tower, the Mac Pro is designed around a revolutionary unified thermal core. It will be the most powerful Mac yet, featuring next generation Xeon processors, dual workstation-class GPUs, Thunderbolt 2, PCIe-based flash storage, and ultra-fast ECC memory.

What you all are probably wondering is: how big are these improvements? and what does this all mean for the future of Final Cut Pro X?

Mac Pro - Final Cut Pro X

2013 MAC PRO AND FCPX?

Most Final Cut Pro X editors right now are either using the current Mac Pro, the new thin iMac or one of the models from the previous two or three years. How does the upcoming Mac Pro stack up against these models? And is it worth it to make the upgrade?

PROCESSING

The new Mac Pro will include the next generation Intel Xeon E5 processors, which contains up to 12 core configurations deliver double the floating point performance. With two AMD FirePro workstation-class GPUs, the all-new Mac Pro is up to 2.5 times faster than the current Mac Pro and delivers up to an amazing 7 teraflops of compute power.

GRAPHICS

Having 2 GPUs built into the tower may be the most important update pertaining to FCPX, as Final Cut uses the graphics cards to render out projects and maintain smooth background rendering.

MEMORY

Starting with 1.866MHz ECC DDR3 RAM, the new Mac Pro will have an abundant amount of memory and can be upgraded even further if needed. OS X Mavericks is said to support up to 128GB of RAM, which will dwarf most iMac’s 12-32GB.

STORAGE

The new Mac Pro will implement next generation PCI Express flash storage. According to Apple, this new flash storage type (1250MBps) is up to 2.5 times faster than the SATA-based solid-state drives (500MBps).

EXTERNAL EXPANSIONS

The new Mac Pro include six Thunderbolt 2 ports, which supports up to six daisy-chained devices, giving you the ability to connect up to 36 high-performance peripherals. Thunderbolt 2 is completely backwards compatible with existing Thunderbolt peripherals, and allows you to transfer data between Macs faster and easier than ever.

DISPLAY

The Mac Pro doesn’t come with the beautiful 27″ display that the iMac does, but it includes any video and audio outputs that you would ever want including the latest external displays and 4K desktop displays. With 2 GPUs on board, the Mac Pro can support up to 3 4K monitors at once!

COOLING

In addition to giving the Mac Pro a sleek new look, the cylindrical tower appears to have a functional purpose. The single fan at the top of the cylinder acts like a vacuum motor, propelling the hot air out of the tower.

CONCLUSION

With all these updates and possible expansions, the new Mac Pro will not only be the fastest Mac to date; it will undoubtably be the most powerful FCPX machine ever. With faster processing, storage and memory, Final Cut Pro X will load faster, access media quicker, and hopefully render at ludicrous speeds.

It took years for Apple to bring these updates to the Mac Pro, but with these huge strides, they might not have to touch it again for a few more years to come.

There is no price information on the Mac Pro yet, but we can assume that it will fetch for around $3500.

The next generation Mac Pro will be available later this year. Keep your eyes peeled for more on the Mac Pro as the release date approaches. You can also watch the 2013 Apple Keynote which covers the Mac Pro here: http://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2013/

Frame Fixer for GoPro Plugin for FCPX from CrumplePop

$
0
0

You can mount a GoPro® almost anywhere – but it’s sometimes hard to get a shot that’s level. Frame Fixer for GoPro® is a utility for correcting GoPro® alignment issues in FCP X. Just drag and drop Frame Fixer onto your footage to precisely level your clip with one simple control.

BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP FOR GOPRO®

Frame Fixer for GoPro® was created specifically with the GoPro® camera in mind. Simply drag and drop Frame Fixer on to your clip, dial in the controls, and see the change applied to your GoPro® footage immediately.

FIX MISALIGNED VIDEO

The GoPro®’s lack of monitor can make framing your shot a little tricky. Often after a long shoot, you arrive home to see several of your clips horizontally tilted. Frame Fixer lets you quickly match your footage to the correct horizon line, yielding clips that you can intercut with level footage from other cameras.

DRAG AND DROP

Simply go to the Effects area in FCP X and from Utilities drag Frame Fixer onto your clip. If you have a relatively new Mac (even an iMac or Mac Mini), you can play back your clip in real time – no waiting to render.

DEVELOPED FOR FINAL CUT PRO X

CrumplePop Frame Fixer for GoPro® was designed from the ground up for FCP X. Because Frame Fixer is a native FCP X effect, it can be dropped onto your footage and previewed in real time – no need to wait for rendering. Most importantly, Frame Fixer allows you correct your footage without ever leaving your FCP X editing environment.

FCPXLAND’S REVIEW

The good: Frame Fixer is CrumplePop’s third GoPro specific plugin, and it is as simple and easy-to-use their previous outings. It is also only $29.

The bad: Leveling is a simple task that can be achieved in FCPX with the transformation tools in the inspector. The key is to scale the footage as you rotate it as to not allow the edges to be seen.

Overall: The GoPro is a great camera for a great price, and there are definitely a lot of GoPro editors that want to take their footage to the next level (no pun intended), but even this effect is a simple task that can be achieved in the FCPX Inspector.

FCPXLAND’S REVIEW

The good: TriTone Overlays is yet another light leak/color overlay plugin, but nonetheless it is still a rather nice one that allows you to control numerous options including blend mode, effect mix, opacity, ect.

The bad: TriTone is a simple gradient overlay that you could make quickly in a Photoshop file.

Overall: If you like that tinted camera look, TriTone is an economical solution for $24

Apple Releases Logic Pro X

A few months ago I wrote an article about the audio editing strengths of Final Cut Pro X in which I mentioned that FCPX had essentially absorbed many of the filters and features of the old Logic which saved time of round tripping the audio between the two applications.

I could not have been more wrong. The extremely useful filters included in FCPX only scratch the surface of what Apple’s new Logic Pro X can do.

As you all probably wondering: what updates does the application offer, and what does this mean for Final Cut Pro X users?

Minimum 5GB of disk space. 35GB of optional content available via in-app download.

CONCLUSION

I can only assume that Logic Pro X will receive a similar split response that FCPX upon its release.

Apple took a similar approach in making Logic Pro X, down to the skin, price point, and more user friendly interface, which many Final Cut 7 users saw as a flaw in X because they felt that it was dumbed down to a non-Pro level. I personally applaud Apple for taking significant risks to improve their software instead of making marginal version updates to their current products.

Obviously Logic is intended to be primarily used for Music production, but with a much larger audio loop and EQ filters library, I think that Logic Pro X can help Final Cut Pro X users take their sound to an even higher level than the already stellar audio effects in FCPX. Apple must have also taken notice of the popular FCPX iPad/iPhone controllers that have been featured on the App store as they have integrated an iPad controller into the purchase of Logic Pro X.

FCPXLAND’S REVIEW

The good: Cheap, Easy to use, Lots of Options. PROTEXT Volume 1 from Pixel Film Studios is a simple yet effective way to stylize your text animations to achieve a more advanced look without the hassle.

The bad: Keyframing is a large part of what makes this plugin work. If your not completely comfortable with keyframing in FCPX, this plugin may shy some users away. Having a few preset keyframes already in the packaging would have been nice.

Overall: A good, inexpensive, and simple way of making text more interesting without the extra work, saving tremendous amounts of time for the consumer, making this plugin very valuable.

A set of 20 motion graphic elements compatible with both Pc and Mac, this pack contains motion graphics such as random text, digital gears, radars and graphs. The user can resize, rotate, crop, modify opacity, use composite modes, apply effects and most importantly combine them. If your planing a High-tech themed video. With its easy to use drag and drop features I could see how this theme could be useful.

SiFi Nostalgia

I grew up in the 80′s, I used to love Buck Rogers, Star Wars, even the original Star Trek type effects that struck a core in the imagination of their viewers. This bundle delivers a nostalgia from high tech shows that made you believe anything is possible. What makes this tool powerful is how easy it is to drag and drop, within seconds your videos could look amazing with high quality production SiFi type transition effects.

FCPXLAND’S REVIEW

The Good I can’t stress enough how easy it is to use, you don’t need training or directions. Just download, Install, drag and drop.

The bad: Very specific effects. I can’t see a huge number of editors purchasing this bundle because High Tech Vol. 1 borders the lines of Spy Kids type Cheesy Transitions. There are seven transitions in this bundle; I wish I could be more resourceful with the effects at hand. Problem is, the effects aren’t very customizable and after you’ve run out of ideas your left wanting more (maybe creativity on my part is the real issue). Where’s Vol. 2?

Overall: Great transitions, Easy to Use, Need more customization features, Where’s Vol. 2?

Corporate productions to rap videos, broadcast sports programmes to personal web edits can all get a stylish hi-tech look with these fresh new sophisticated transitions. Stylish and easy to use, these transitions have been built by editors for editors and take the hard work out of making that video sizzle.

Transitions that would have taken many layers, complex mattes and some maths to complete are now possible within FCPX with a couple of clicks.

Tech Transitions is the first commercial product for FCPX to feature temporal or retiming of video within the effect. Use the automatic repeaters to step or duplicate action on the cut.

The freeze versions of effects holds the last frame of the outgoing media and the first frame of the incoming media, performing the transition between the two stills. Perfect for emphasising movement and because they are transitions, the freezes will automatically update when the effect is slipped, duration changed or copy and pasted. No more razor blading and making freeze frames!

$49 buys you 30 effects in the pack or you can test out the transitions on your projects by downloading the watermarked trial for free.

Many effects have presets for animation direction and adjustments for layout and colour

a great way to transition between video or to reveal or conceal graphics. UTube Buffer simulates the pause and buffering of popular video sharing websites.

Transitions can be slipped, lengthened, shortened and cut & pasted like any other transition. Want to match an effect to a clients corporate colour? no problem, many of the effects have multiple parameters to fine tune the look.

FCPXLAND’S REVIEW

The good: Great transitions! I could easily apply these effects to many projects. Definitely see the value in a tool like Tech Transitions.

The bad: I don’t really have anything bad to say. For any questions on how to use their “easy to use” transitions they have a video tutorial. Like I said, I can’t say anything bad.

Overall: A great product I recommend!
